Alcohol and Tobacco
Alcohol and tobacco guidance in University of Edinburgh residences.
Alcohol
- The legal age for the purchase and consumption of alcohol in Scotland is 18.
- It is widely available in pubs, bars, clubs, supermarkets and off licences (liquor stores).
- There is one bar, JMCC, on the Pollock Halls site, serving both alcohol and soft drinks.
- There is no accommodation at Edinburgh University which is specifically designated as "alcohol-free".
- Accommodation, Catering and Events encourage students who wish to consume alcohol to do so in a responsible manner.
Tobacco
- In March 2006, new legislation aimed at completely eliminating smoking in public places came into force in Scotland.
- Smoking is now completely banned in all bars, coffee bars, restaurants and common rooms.
- Smoking is also banned in all bedrooms in residences such as Pollock Halls, Richmond Place, etc.
- Some blocks of University flats, and many of the University residences including all of Pollock Halls, are designated as completely non-smoking areas.
- In virtually all the rest of the University, there is a non-smoking policy in force.
Healthy Eating Awards
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing fresh food and healthy alternatives in our outlets, we offer a wide variety of healthy and nutritious food, including soups, salad bar items, main meals, pizza and pasta.
In recognition of our Healthy Food Agenda, we have been we have received a number of awards:
'Eat Safe' award
The main aim of the scheme is to provide an incentive to caterers to strive for food hygiene and food safety management standards beyond those required by law. It also helps consumers to make informed choices about where to eat out by providing a recognisable "sign of excellence" in standards of food hygiene.
'Healthy Living' award
Accommodation, Catering and Events at the University of Edinburgh has to date achieved 12 Healthy Living Awards across 14 of its catering operations. Accommodation, Catering and Events took the strategic decision to work towards achieving the Healthy Living Award, which is a Scottish national award-giving recognition to caterers and the food service sector who take a range of steps to provide healthier options.

'Food For the Brain' award
The University of Edinburgh was the first-ever "Food For The Brain" University in the UK and achieved this award in 2007 and has been successful with an annual re-assessment every year since achieving the award. The aim of the award is to promote awareness of the link between learning, behaviour, mental health and nutrition and to educate and provide education to promote mental health through optimum nutrition.

The University of Edinburgh offers a diverse range of catering services from coffee shops, catered halls and hotels to outside catering and fine dining. We are passionate about food and, through the University’s “Good Food Policy”, we are proud to promote local companies across all our menus and to shout about our wonderful, like-minded suppliers who support us, and us them, in our journey to showcase the very best of what Scotland can offer.
